Acne Treatment using doTerra Essential Oils.

Treating Acne with Essential Oils

"Acne is a skin condition, generally of the face, commonly found in adolescents and young adults.  Acne is characterized by red, irritating blemishes (pimples) on the skin.  Most commonly, acne is found on the oil-producing parts of the body such as the face, chest, back, upper arms, and back of neck.  Acne is a blockage of a skin pore by dead skin cells, tiny hairs, and oil secreted by the sebacaeous glands located near the hair follicles in the face, neck and back.  This blockage occurs deep within the skin.  Acne is not currently believed to be caused by dirt on the face or by eating certain foods, and research has indicated that over-scrubbing the face may actually make acne worse."  (Modern Essentials)

Acne can also be caused by toxins in the body so a cleanse done periodically will also help with acne.  Some people feel foods do not make a difference in acne but others feel they do.  I truly feel what you eat makes a difference as most toxins are removed through the skin. I have a friend whose daughter had a problem with acne that cleared up when she was on a diet to lose weight.  They felt there was no question that the clear skin was a result of her diet which excluded refined sugar.  I have heard many experiences of people clearing up acne and other skin problems from eating healthy, pure foods and from doing periodic cleanses to rid the body of toxins.  Cutting out sugar and processed/refined foods is one of the best things a person can do to reduce or completely clear up acne.

Bear with me as I discuss a variety of ideas.  Toward the end, I do summarize what I would recommend...

Boyd Truman’s recommendations for acne from his book, Dr. Me:

Rub melaleuca, lemon or Purify on area of concern
Use LLV (CRS, xEO Mega) daily (These are doTerra’s daily vitamins, essential oil/omega oils and cell repair supplements)
Use zendocrine daily. (doTerra’s detoxification blend)
Can also use Clear Skin, melissa, sandalwood, and geranium.
Drink lemon, grapefruit, or lime in water each day.

Clear Skin is an essential oil based acne product doTerra has.  There is a spot treatment in a roll-on bottle as well as a foaming face wash.  Purify is an oil blend.

Recommendations from Modern Essentials book:

Oils to use: Clear Skin, melaleucca.  Also, lavender, geranium, sandalwood, thyme, lemon, lemongrass, vetiver, marjoram, patchouli.

You can also place about 10 drops of an oil in a 1-2 ounce spray bottle filled with pure water, and mist your face several times a day. (Modern Essentials)

You can dilute any of the oils above with olive oil, or coconut oil, or almond oil and apply on location. The ratio is 10 drops of essential oil to 1 ounce of carrier oil.

You can put some oils on a blemish itself without diluting as long as they are doTerra’s CPTG quality oils. It is important to make sure the oil you use is undiluted by the manufacturer and pure.  Other, cheaper oils, may have added chemicals which can irritate the skin.  Caution should be used at first to make sure there is not a reaction.  Because people have different skin types, the oils will react differently from person to person. Each person will need to experiment to see what essential oil blend combination will work best.  Some oils will heal and nourish the skin and others have antiseptic and antibacterial properties so a combination of both types is beneficial.

Cleansing the skin is very important as oils left on the skin increases acne.  I would use a soap that has limited or no chemicals.  One of my favorites is Dr. Bronner’s castile soap.  You can buy the plain or scented formula at a health food store. If you buy the plain soap, you can scent the oil by adding an essential oil that will help acne and smell good.

Drinking a lot of water is critical as it will help move the toxins out of the body.  Drink at least 2 liters of water a day with a few drops of lemon, lime or grapefruit essential oil added.  The water and the oils help cleanse and move the toxins out.  Toxins in the body can cause the liver and kidneys to be sluggish.

Breaking a sweat everyday is another way to help remove toxins from the body.  Why? Most of the toxins are eliminated through the skin. Try to exercise for 20-30 minutes a day.

To create a natural gel for acne combine a quarter of a cup of aloe vera gel with ten to twelve drops of geranium oil, ten drops of lavender oil and seven drops of lemongrass or tea tree oil.  Blend thoroughly and apply to blemishes twice a day after cleansing the skin.  Do not use around the eyes.  (Source: naturalnews.com)

The Essential Oil Treatment for Acne I would Have My Child Do:

Currently none of my children are suffering from acne (ages 21, 18, 12 and 7-hooray) but if they were, I would have them do the following:

To cleanse skin morning and night-Dr. Bronner’s unscented castile soap with lime and lemon essential oils added. (Or use doTerra’s face wash)

To treat blemishes-After cleansing the skin, rub melaleuca, lemon or Purify (antiseptic, antibacterial oils)  on blemishes daily, diluted with coconut oil as needed, Or, for a fantastic blend, use doTerra’s Clear Skin Topical Blend roll on blemish treatment which is a combination of several different oils that combat acne.

To nourish and moisturize the face-Rub lavender or frankincense on face twice a day to soothe the skin, heal and prevent or improve scarring or use a natural gel.  To create a natural gel for acne, combine a quarter of a cup of aloe vera gel with ten to twelve drops of geranium oil, ten drops of lavender oil and seven drops of lemongrass or tea tree oil.  Blend thoroughly and apply to blemishes twice a day after cleansing the skin.  Do not use around the eyes.  The aloe vera is a great way to moisturize the skin without oils that can increase acne. To keep skin clean and prevent outbreaks-Mist face throughout the day with small spray bottle filled with 10 drops of melaleuca, lemon or Purify essential oil and 1-2 ounce pure water.

Take zendocrine supplement daily to cleanse and detox the body.

Drink lemon, grapefruit or lime essential oil in 2 liters of water daily.

Break a sweat 20-30 minutes a day.

Eliminate or limit refined sugar and processed foods.
Also, doTerra has a kit with the Clear Skin Foaming Face Wash and the Clear Skin Topical Blend for Spot Treatments ($40 Retail, $30 if you have a wholesale membership).

Thanks for sharing such wonderful tips, always needed when acne starts to show up on our skin, sometimes it gets very frustrating and you feel like hiding your face from everyone.

Exactly! I think we've all been there. Something else to note: Sometimes when you first start using the oils on your acne, you will break out more because the oils are bringing it all to the surface. Stick with it and you will have clear skin in the end!

I use tea tree oil in a mixture of warm water and put a small hand towel or face cleaning pad in it and massage my face with it. It works great. http://www.essentialoilspedia.com
